Looking for Employment

The process of getting in to a new job can be stressful and with support it makes the process easier. When looking for employment there are many different ways to go about it and at Work Opportunities we use a range of strategies with you in the search for a job of your choice.

Strategies that we use with people are individualised but may include:

  • Research the job market. Take time to look through online job sites, Trademe, Seek, Indeed and the website of companies that you are interested in working for will have job ads posted on them.

  • Read job ads closely. When reading ads note down any names of contact people, any special instructions and identify where skills match with the job ad or job description.

  • Check your online image. Employers will Google peoples names when applications come in. Go through emails addresses, social media and Google your name so you know what can be seen online about you. Keep your private life private.

  • Create online applicant profiles. Sign up to websites of companies, create a portfolio, Linkedln, Seek or Trademe account to show your skills and abilities to prospective employers.

  • CV and Cover Letter. CVs and cover letters can be laid out in variety of ways but in all CVs and cover letters they need to be targeted to the company being applied to, and specific to the job description.

  • Job Applications. Online or on paper these always need to be filled in accurately. Do a practice one before sending it away.

  • Interviews. Preparation about the company, the role and how your skills and abilities match the job description is key. Remember it is a conversation about how you will fit into the role and the team. A couple of days before the interview work out what to wear and how to get there.

  • Prepare your referees. Always let referees know what jobs are being applied for and who maybe contacting them.
